Why are futures so important?

In one word HEDGING your bets. If you have a cash position that is LONG
ie you have bought the market, your hedging or future position will
probably be SHORT or selling the market, which is the exact opposite
to your cash position. That way no matter what the market does you
either make money or at least keep losses to a minimum. Only a poor
man cannot afford to insure against an uncertain future. Yet they
can often afford to smoke and drink and pay huge tax bills for the
pleasure. A rich man cannot afford to pay too much in taxes because
he needs his money to invest in income producing assets that throw off
CASH like there's NO TOMORROW (pun intended).
